A critical review of the actual methods, procedures and concepts applied to the procurement, assurance and control of components for space application is presented. The result of this review is reflected in the ESA components program plan which aims at enhancing the availability of advanced component technology for forthcoming space programs and providing a solid technology platform in Europe. The main elements of the plan including ESA component policy and long term objectives are described. Efforts in research, technology, standardization and related infrastructure are outlined.
