The National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA), which is supporting a wide range of research and development activities on space automation and robotics, is discussed. The remote manipulator system of the international space station Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), now under development, is addressed. Research effort is now concentrated on the advanced space robotics. The second generation space robotics, which will be used for an orbital servicing vehicle and other unmanned vehicles, is now the main research. The characteristics of the second generation space robotics is teleoperation and shared autonomy. The role sharing between human operator and robot will be the key issue of this advanced space robotics.
