The principal known effects of the space flight environment upon the physiologic function of human subjects have been reviewed as have the results and validity of biomedical ground-based simulation. Where known, the time courses of these physiologic changes have been described. Our ability to modify the deconditioning effects of space flight has been discussed from the standpoints (1) of improving the effectiveness of environmental control and life support systems and (2) of providing countermeasures (especially exercise) as a means of modifying the effects of weightlessness and a degree of physical inactivity.
