The concept of preventive maintenance is very important in the effective management and deployment of vehicle fleets. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) operates a large fleet of on-road and offroad equipment. Newer engines and vehicles are equipped with on-board diagnostic systems that can provide data on engine operation as indicators of engine load. There is the possibility of tracking these parameters to refine predictions for when equipment maintenance should be performed. Project 0-6626 aimed to provide a proof of concept for this idea by studying TxDOTs fleet, selecting a vehicle category for data collection, and developing an algorithm that can be used to recommend appropriate oil change intervals based on engine data collected through on-board diagnostic systems.
