A number of economic and technological issues associated with the dynamic field of small satellite systems and applications are addressed. Current activities are described in the design and development of small satellites, and assesses potential commercial markets for these satellites and their services. The research includes a history of the small satellite industry, current activities of satellite manufacturers, support services for small satellite systems, including launch vehicles and ground control, potential users of small satellites, the availability of various enabling technologies, and other factors which might enable small satellites to be commercially successful. Also addressed are the potential difficulties of small satellite development and production. Based upon an extensive overview of existing literature, and in-depth interviews with the entire breadth of the industry, this study represents up-to-date information regarding this growing area of commercial space activity.
