The development and applied research program consisted of the construction and development of a moving model facility and measurements of bus and truck induced aerodynamic disturbances on 1/10 scale models traveling at actual highway speeds using the completed facility. The highway aerodynamic test facility, built for this purpose, consists of means for propelling two models along a 225 foot long track at speeds up to 70 mph simultaneously; a system for retrieving the data from the models while in motion, and a large free jet wind tunnel for producing sidewinds. Data produced by this facility is scaled by means of well established aerodynamic scaling laws to predict the forces produced on full scale cars as they pass closely to buses and trucks under a variety of typical highway situations.
