This report presents a set of case studies of risk management practices of regulated common motor carriers of property. Only risks unique to the industry and/or of special concern to the industry are examined. The study focuses upon three major concerns: (1) liabilities arising from common carriage transportation including cargo damage liabilities; (2) workmans compensation liabilities; and, (3) safety and loss prevention activities. The views of three of the four case study motor carriers on the probable impact of federal regulatory revision of the interstate motor freight industry upon motor carrier insurance activities are also examined. Insurance industry views of the probable impact of federal regulatory revision of the interstate motor freight industry are reported with an emphasis upon the probable impact on underwriting practices.
