This report considers means for improving the handling rate of palletized cargo at the craft-beach interface with reference to the advanced landing craft under development by the Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program. A base-line unloading rate is established and components of the base-line system are studied to see if modifications to the equipment or off-loading methods can effect an increase in unloading rates. A number of advanced concepts are considered, the more promising of which include a multiple pallet transporter, sliding craft deck, causeway, and portable nearshore breakwater. While these concepts improve unloading rates in specific instances, they may be difficult to justify in terms of their cost and contribution to the overall efficiency of the general unloading phase of amphibious operations. A more desirable option may be to increase the number of rough terrain forklifts and/or develop a more efficient forklift. (Author)
