At Defense Research Establishment of Sweden (FOA) research is performed on gated viewing using laser radar as source of illuminatin, producing laser energy reflection-intensity images of 'slices' of the terrain. Benefits from using gated viewing with laser radar are penetration of obscurants (smoke, camouflage nets, etc), better angular resolution for a certain aperture and combined 2-D imaging and range measurements. The purpose of this report is to investigate ways of developing an automatic target detection scheme for gated viewing images. Mainly the report focuses on state-of-the-art 3-D image processing algorithms, but some attention is also payed to statistically based target detection and texture based target detection.
