An extensive automotive test program was conducted to define the state-of-the-art of vehicle handling for application to the Experimental Safety Vehicle(ESV)development program. The methodology employed to satisfy the program objectives and the summary results are discussed in this volume. Areas of performance covered include braking, acceleration/power, steering, and general handling. Accident avoidance specifications in these areas are then recommended for the ESV Family Sedan based on the state-of-the-art measurements. (Author)
