Tests were conducted on a 1:100-scale model to investigate various design elements of a propsed U.S. Navy ship mooring facility off the west coast of Point Loma. The model reproduced approximately 9000 ft of the Point Loma shoreline and sufficient offshore area to allow generation of the required test waves. A 1:100-scale model of an Essex class aircraft carrier was used to simulate the moored ship. A 60-ft-long wave generating machine and electrical wave-height measuring and recording apparatus were also utilized in the conduct of the investigation. It was concluded from test results that (a) a floating approach causeway to the ship for vehicular traffic would not be feasible due to the excessive movement to which it would be subjected during storms, (b) the length of the protective breakwater could be reduced from 3600 ft as originally proposed to 2100 ft without materially lessening the protection afforded the mooring area, and (c) a safe anchorage and loading area could be constructed in the immediate vicinity for use by small craft being utilized as shuttle boats.
