The Coast Guard, in 1944, procured ten amphibian trucks, DUKW, Model 353, from the Army, and has employed them since that time at Lifeboat Stations along the east coast for saving life and property. One DUKW was subjected to tests on roads, beaches and water with satisfactory results. It was subsequently altered to better suit it to Coast Guard use. The DUKW, after alterations, was tested on roads, beaches and in water, including surf estimated 15 to 20 feet high. Performance, as prior to alterations, was satisfactory. The alterations, however, offered better protection to crew and passengers against the sea and inclement weather, better adapted it for work alongside other craft or personnel in the water and gave better towing facilities. Coast Guard use of DUKW's is recommended until a more suitable vehicle has been produced.
