An experiment has been conducted in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire to discover whether there is any correlation between a driver's characteristic speed and his accident rate. The speeds and registration numbers of more than 31,000 cars were recorded at ten sites on rural main roads. They were processed to give a speed ratio for each observed car; this was the ratio of the observed speed to the mean speed of neighbouring cars in the traffic stream. Many of the cars were observed several times and mean speed ratios were obtained for these. Accident date for more than 13,000 involved cars were obtained from four local police forces. (Author)
