The time taken to complete a standardised shopping trip was studied in seven High-Street areas (i.e. typical towns with shops sited on either side of a main road), four precinct areas (i.e. towns built in recent years which possess vehicle-free shopping areas) and two newly developed High-Street areas. The trips were made on foot and began and ended at a car park. The number of busy roads crossed per trip was noted, the delay incurred was estimated, and the frequency of pedestrian accidents in each area during a three-year period was obtained. (Author)
