There will be a Protein Crystal Growth (PCG) experiment activity in the middeck on STS 51-D. This activity is sponsored by the Microgravity Science and Applications Division of this office. It involves a small, hand-held sized apparatus that is a precursor to other middeck experimentation and follow-on development. The McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Corporation has agreed to include this unit in one of the middeck lockers used in conjunction with the flight of the CFES experiment on STS 51-D. operate the unit. The CFES payload specialist, Mr. Charley Walker, will The objective of the KG program is to grcxJ protein crystals large enough to permit analyses by means of X-ray or neutron diffraction techniques. The enclosed Mission Operation Report provides some additional information related to this PCG experiment. Details regarding the STS 51-D flight are contained in the STS 51-D Prelaunch Flight Operation Report No. M-989-51-D.
