A graphic simulation study of the Atlanta air traffic control terminal area was requested by the Southern Region to assist in developing a feasible plan for airspace use and air traffic control operations in the Atlanta metropolitan area, assuming the establishment of a second major airport. The second major airport was assumed to be located in the Paulding/Polk County area of Georgia, approximately 15 nautical miles west of Dobbins Air Force Base/Naval Air Station Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia. The study considered instrument operations to all instrument flight rule airports within the Atlanta terminal area. The primary runway configuration considered at the new airport was a northwest/southeast alignment of four parallel runways with two additional parallel north/south runways. The present major airport, William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, was considered to have four parallel east/west runways. Three other runway alignments for the new airport, a west/northwest and southwest were also studied. (Modified author abstract)
