Close scrutiny of the causes of recent general-aviation fatal crashes reveals that there is a wide discrepancy between the accident rate and the actual risk of flying. A large percentage of accidents occur through horsplay, foolishness, and lack of respect for nature. An increased awareness of the state of one's body while flying, enhanced training, and attitude inculcation can do much to lower the accident rate. Pilots should be instructed to avoid flight while suffering from emotional distress or the effects of alcohol consumption or during deteriorating weather conditions. (Author)
