All problems caused by linear acceleration of impact type are dealt with, not only in aviation, but also in more general cases. This study is based on a deep review of recent aviation and automobile research efforts; it covers the different aspects of the question: biodynamic, physiological, pathological and clinical. Impact test facilities are also described. The incidence of injury to aircrew in ejection or crash can be reduced by application of the results of research. Towards this end this meeting provides an opportunity for a confrontation of current views from the aspects of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Its conclusions are of practical importance to vehicle designers and for operational commands which make use of these vehicles. (Author)
