This paper is a lightly edited transcript of a 1975 talk presented at a conference on simulation of aero systems cosponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory. The characteristics of aircraft simulators leading to their effective and economical use are shown experimentally to differ as a function of their application, whether in engineering research, pilot performance assessment and prediction or training. Issues in the design and use of flight training simulators involve the effectiveness and economics of motion systems, visual systems, and performance measurement systems.
