A series of field experients were carried out to investigate the treatment of warm fogs by hygroscopic materials. The program philosophy has involved strong interaction between physical observations made in the field experiment phases and computer modeling which attempts to simulate the treatment effects. An instrumented ground site was set up in October 1969 in the Noyo River Valley in northern California. Fourteen tests were carried out using a DC-3 aircraft and a helicopter to dispense hygroscopic material at the fog top. Extensive ground instrumentation recorded the effects of the treatment. Results of the Noyo Valley experiments led to the establishment of a semi-operational test program at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, California, in January 1971. C-130 aircraft and an Air Force helicopter were used as the seeding aircraft. A previous study was made at Forbes AFB iN November 1970 to obtain dispensing characteristics from the helicopter. Ground instrumentation at McClellan recorded the results of the tests. It was found that the hygroscopic treatment could be carried out readily within the constraints of an operational base, using operational personnel for aircraft vectoring and dissemination.
