The United States Coast Guard has conducted an extensive evaluation of three SK-5 air cushion vehicles to determine their potential usefulness in meeting the expanding missions and responsibilities of the service. The Coast Guard spent 1,400 hours operating the three craft while participating in 185 search and rescue cases. In addition, the vehicles were effectively used in servicing aids-to-navigation, on oil pollution and law enforcement missions, as well as numerous operations with other agencies. The report details the operations, the personnel and training requirements, the Arctic deployment, maintenance and operating costs and new developments. (Author)
