Recently in force employment studies several high level campaign models have been developed. These models mainly describe the interactions between Soviet submarines and NATO reinforcement and resupply shipping. Values of input parameters are required, which could either be determined by submodelling or simply be given. The choice highly depends on the sensitivity of the results to these input parameters and to the available information for developing submodels. This memorandum describes submodels for two input parameters to higher models: the encounter rate between transitting NATO ships and a submarine on patrol, and the average time a submarine will spend inside the convoy defences when attempting to attack a convoy.
