The report covers the first phase of the 'Cabtrack' series of studies into the technical and economic feasibility of 'Autotaxi' systems for the joint Ministry of Transport/Ministry of Technology Transport Research Assessment Group. Autotaxis are small automatic vehicles, available on demand, for non-stop station-to-station transport on reserved tracks. Although much of the study was based on hypothetical fine mesh networks covering Central London, many of the results are of general application. The system should be suited to many types of urban and suburban environment, some of which it is intended to study in the near future. Aspects of the problem studied include traffic demand, network design, system control, and costing. Capacities of 4000 to 5000 vehicles per hour per track should be attainable with minimum running speeds of 20 mile/h, and safe merging should be possible at this high traffic density. (Author)
