Preliminary conclusions from statistical data are: Front cover impact on certain types of vehicles with separate chassis frame construction, causes rubber body mounts to pull out of the frame and permits excess intrusion of the impacting vehicle into the occupants' space. Knee contact with the dashboard occurs inspite of restraint systems. Serious injuries including fractures and dislocations of the knee, femur and hip can occur through such contact. Restraint systems usuage is extremely low. Whiplash injuries are occuring inspite of the presence of head rests. Steering wheels mounted on energy absorbing columns collapsed and struck the dashboard in front of the wheel. This is particularly true of a compact model with a cowel dashboard pad. Corner and side impacts result in intrusion of the occupant space and in severe or fatal injury. Restraint systems effectiveness can be improved by decreasing compression of the seat cushion, decreasing the elongation of the lap belt and by padding the lower dashboard where knee contact occurs. Air bags or other as yet undetermined designs for the protection of the unrestrained occupant are essential.
