A pair of water jet propulsion units were installed in a 3 x 14 NL pontoon barge by Amphibious Construction Battalion One at Coronado, California. After a series of performance tests, the barge was outfitted as a warping tug and was in-service tested for approximately 8 months. Since that time it has been in use by PHIBCB 1 for a year in routine warping tug service. Because of lower efficiency, the water jet units consume more fuel than conventional propeller-type propulsion units. In the surf zone, however, where warping tug performance is critical, the water jet units are far superior to conventional units. For all other warping tug operations they perform as well or better than propeller-type propulsion units currently in use by the amphibious construction battalions. (Author)
