Statistics indicate that elderly drivers (drivers 65 and above) are involved in an increasingly high percentage of accidents at intersections. In order to develop countermeasures to reduce the problem, the study identified traffic and geometric characteristics that are associated with the involvement of elderly drivers in accidents and developed models relating these characteristics to the risk of accident involvement. The results have indicated that the risk of accident involvement of the elderly driver (expressed in terms of an involvement ratio) is higher at highway intersections outside cities than at intersections inside cities. It was also found that the provision of longer amber signal times and increased protection for left turn phases will be very beneficial to the older driver.
