The report summarizes data regarding shipboard habitability obtained from the Naval personnel surveys administered in 1965 and 1969. Most enlisted men and officers found their shipboard living quarters to be about what they expected or worse than they expected when they first joined the Navy. Enlisted men would have most liked to see the following improvements made in shipboard living quarters: more storage space, rooms instead of open compartments, and better beds/furniture. The improvement most desired by officers was larger staterooms. In general, enlisted men and officers who were not oriented toward a Navy career saw living conditions afloat to be more of a negative influence than did the men and officers who were career-oriented.
