Previous studies of the budgets of low income households have shown that they can afford to spend relatively little on transport. However, low income households are much more dependent for their transport on public transport, particularly buses. A study was commissioned to analyze household expenditure on buses. There were four aims of the analysis: to explore the characteristics of bus users; to establish the amount households spend on bus transport and how this varies with income and other factors; to estimate the proportion of household spending devoted to bus transport and how this varies with income and other factors; to investigate whether it is possible to discriminate between the characteristics of households who have a high or low expenditure on buses and to discern if possible whether high bus expenditure has an impact on other items of household expenditure.
