Performance tests were conducted by the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center (NAFEC) on the air traffic control radar beacon system (ATCRBS) type I flight inspection monitor (FIM-I). The FIM-I equipment was then installed on a NAFEC test aircraft for limited flight testing in the mid-Atlantic states. Software was developed for data reduction and postflight analysis to evaluate the performance of the FIM-I equipment. Laboratory performance tests showed that the equipment met contract specifications. Flight test data showed a deficiency in performance on signals near minimum trigger level sensitivity, but since these were a small percentage of the total data, the interrogation environmental information obtained was eminently useful and informative. It is concluded that the equipment performance deficiency should be corrected and that additional data analysis software is required prior to effective utilization of FIM-I for ATCRBS monitoring.
