Software has been developed at the Naval Ocean Research and Development Activity (NORDA) to process and analyze digital satellite imagery data in real-time aboard Navy vessels. Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) polar orbiters will be received directly onboard ship via an SMQ-11 satellite receiving antenna. This data will then be processed on a resident minicomputer/image processing system to generate atmospheric and oceanographic products. This software has been developed in support of the Tactical Environmental Support System (TESS) version 3 (TESS (3)) to provide ships at sea access to environmental satellite data. This is a scheduled upgrade to TESS versions 1 and 2 which currently consist of desktop systems that generate a variety of acoustic and environmental parameter products. TESS (3) offers for the first time the capability to process and display real-time digital satellite imagery at sea. This version of TESS is scheduled to be implemented on major combatants and at regional ocean centers during the 1990 to 1993 time frame. Keywords: Meteorological satellites; Reprints. (KT)
