One of the research activities of the Space Division of the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR is the application of modern estimation and control theory to spacecraft attitude control problems. Algorithms for spacecraft state estimation and attitude control, as well as for inertial-optical attitude determination have been developed previously. The present report describes three in-flight experiments with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite IRAS, during which these algorithms have been loaded from the ground into the IRAS on-board computer and have been tested in-flight. All experiments are described in detail, in-flight results are presented and their performance is analyzed and compared to the original behavior. The report concludes with a summary which presents the main conclusions.
