The purpose of this development program was to design, fabricate, and test a prototype variable flexibility tether system, which by virtue of its controllable rigidity and remotely actuated manipulator, may be used as a simple safety tether, a translation aid, an astronaut attachment and positioning tool and a means of moving and recovering objects in space.
