An evaluation of a Small Lightweight Altitude Transmission Equipment, SLATE III Mark I was conducted to determine its suitability for operation in present and proposed air traffic control environments. Flight tests were conducted in the Advanced Radar Traffic Control System (ARTS) environment at the Atlanta Terminal Facility, Atlanta, Georgia, and the Stored Program Alpha-Numeric (SPAN) System environment at the Indianapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center, Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition, a short series of bench tests were conducted at the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center (NAFEC), Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was concluded that the SLATE III Mark I is suitable for operation in present and proposed air traffic control environments. It was recommended the Federal Aviation Agency promote, within the general aviation community, the use of radar beacon transponders having capabilities similar to the SLATE III Mark I.
