A Study of five jet vertical takeoff and landing fighter concepts was made considering height and attitude control, ground effect, ingestion losses, control bleed effects, installation losses, component weights, and short takeoff performance. A fixed gross weight of 35,000 pounds was assumed for each of the following concepts studied: Lift Plus Lift/Cruise; Lift/Cruise Plus Remote Burner; Lift/Cruise (bleed air for control); Vertical Attitude Takeoff and Landing, and Tilt Wing. Since total mission performance was not included in the study, no conclusion as to the 'best' concept is made, but rather some of the mission/concept tradeoffs are presented. (Author)
