An automated manufacturing system for sheet metal aircraft structures is presented. Numerically controlled contour machining, heat treatment with glycol quenching, high pressure techniques, and computer assisted storage and transport techniques were developed. Results show a global manufacturing cost reduction of 25% resulting from reduced finishing operations, shortened processing time, increased efficiency, and shortened nonproductive operations.
