A mission in which a metric camera takes high resolution pictures of the Earth for cartography is proposed. The African continent is taken as an example. Because the storage life of conventional film material is 7 months, optimal orbits were selected for given ground coverage as a function of various focal lengths of the camera lens. The mission envisages using a space shuttle for the launch and retrieval of the autonomous satellite. The satellite is based on the concept of a small modular subsatellite and thruster platform.
