The study of aircraft performance in turbulence, especially the response to lateral gusts, is required in order to optimize the use of automatic flight control systems. Those flight conditions emphasized include low altitude approach, landing with wind composed of transversal gusts, and stability at steep angles of attack at low speeds. The preponderant effects of gust loads vis-a-vis degrees of freedom, the roles of the various control surfaces of the aircraft, and the responses of different aircraft planforms are shown, leading to the modelization of these phenomena.
