These proceedings include the 19 papers and ensuing discussions from the symposium sponsored by the AGARD Aerospace Medical Panel held in Williamsburg, Virginia. The physical and mental demands placed on the crews of combat aircraft are severe now and are projected to increase in severity in the next five to fifteen years. The objective of this symposium was to discuss human factors needs, promises and practices to design future aircraft systems to ameliorate the physical stressors and mental workload of the crew. The papers in this symposium address future mission requirements, emerging technologies, findings from research on physiological and cognitive processes and methodology. A crew-centered philosophy must guide design practice both to realize the mission performance benefits of future technology improvements to combat aircraft and to enhance the battle management role of the crew. Implementation of this design philosophy will require knowledge of human capabilities and limitations expressed in a quantitative form meaningful to designers. Automation can improve aircraft and crew performance but must be done with care because it can easily increase instead of reduce mental workload. There are great opportunities to improve information transfer between the aircraft and the crew by better integration of information transfer between the aircraft and the crew by better integration of information in symbolic and pictorial displays. New design approaches and methods are likely to increase g tolerance by crew members as well as escape system effectiveness over a wide range of flight conditions.
