After a summary of the commercial and military uses of the Panama Canal, information is given on transit and navigation in the canal. The author points out that world shipbuilding since 1965 has seen the growth in number of very large bulk carriers. Numerous factors have contributed to the production of a new generation of superships too large to go through the existing canal. The advantages are noted that would accrue from a sea-level interoceanic canal able to transit supercarriers.
