The report examines the past and present use of standard image processing algorithms to aid in video-based image processing systems for evaluating cracks in pavement. The research uses standard techniques where appropriate, but customized algorithms had to be developed. A comprehensive description of effects, both positive and negative, of various algorithms is provided, along with a very specific procedure capable of automatically examining a wide variety of pavement types, including asphalt and concrete. An analysis is provided for converting the software algorithms into a hardware system capable of real-time operations.
