The new Norwegian Nansen-class frigates lack an organic long range air defence capability. Basically, this is a result of the high cost of such a system in relation to the limited resources of a small nation. This lack of capability is currently perceived to be one of the most serious shortfalls of the class. A well-known non-organic solution of this kind of shortfall is to use frigate-controlled fighter aircraft to provide area defence coverage -- thus to some extent separating the sensor from the shooter capability. In this contribution the consequences of adopting such a solution as the only long range frigate air defence are discussed. The discussion is organized as a cost/effectiveness comparison between a traditional organic long range air defence system and the Network Enabled Capability (NEC) solution (frigate- controlled fighter aircraft). The comparison is based on scenarios/cases, where several technical and operational factors are considered.
