U.S. Trauma Research is largely the purview of the Department of Defense, as there is no Trauma Institute at the NIH, although trauma accounts for the largest loss in years of productive life Improvements in the medical care of battle casualties are being adopted by the civilian trauma system Recent increases in funding for military trauma funding are yielding important advances, particularly in hemorrhage control, brain injury diagnosis, and traumatic orthopedic injury There is a large backlog of clinical trials that need to be performed in trauma care.
