A study was undertaken to determine whether or not a single operator can perform effectively functions currently accomplished at two separate FBM submarine stations: ship control, and ballast control. The maneuvers, comprising the test situations, emphasized Steering and Diving, Trim Analysis, Hovering, and Missile Launching under both calm sea and sea state conditions of simulation. Where possible, data were collected on each maneuver under three conditions of operation: (a) fully automatic control serving as a ceiling for system performance; (b) manual control using SQUIRE (display-aiding) for depth and course control, an intermediate workload condition; and (c) manual control using standard (back-up) displays, this condition serving to define the heavy workload condition. Performance data obtained on eight subjects, experienced fleet personnel, indicated that a single operator can perform satisfactorily the assigned functions even under the heaviest workload conditions considered.
