The purpose of this study was to determine the benefits to the national resulting from the application of technical advances to civil aviation. The technical advances that occurred since 1945 and the funds expended on aeronautical R and D were identified. The applications of the advances to civil aircraft and flight related systems were determined. Criteria for determining the benefits of civil aviation were established and quantified where possible. A general methodology for relating the advances and the benefits was developed through the impact of technical advances on the performance of the aircraft and flight systems. Specific methods were used to relate each benefit criterion to advances. These methods were applied to form detailed case studies and, as a result, some modifications to the methods were proposed.
