This paper presents the results of the flight test conducted at Izu-oshima airport to measure atmospheric turbulence using he National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan's (NAL) research airplane, Dornier Do228. The NAL's Do228 is equipped with a research air data system and a DGPS/INS (Differential Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System) hybrid navigation system, which enable it to measure winds aloft accurately. In the flight test, atmospheric turbulence along the approach path was measured successfully, which can measure winds up to 400 meters high using sonic echo, so that the reliability of the flight test results was verified. The flight test results were also compared with the numerical simulation results which were conducted by the Japan Weather Association. The numerical simulations well explained the scales and intensities of the atmospheric turbulence observed on the flight tests.
