The report describes variations in vehicle losses, in both the frequencies and sizes of claims, for damage to twenty 1973 model year private passenger vehicle series during the first ten months of availability. All 1973 model automobiles were required to comply with the Department of Transportation Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 215. This standard was intended to provide protection against damage to a limited range of 'safety related equipment' in 5 mph front-end crashes and in 2.5 mph rear-end crashes. Although the standard was not primarily intended to reduce low-speed crash damage, it was widely hoped there would be such a reduction. In order to measure some of this expected change, baseline results are also presented for the corresponding 1972 model year vehicles, obtained from the same period of time as the 1973 model year results, and from the same insurance companies. The average loss payment per insured vehicle year for all of the 1973 models was $49, for 1972 was $50.
