The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center of the U.S. Department of Transportation's (U.S. DOT) Research and Innovative Technology Administration performed an independent evaluation of the driver acceptance of the Cooperative Intersection Collision Avoidance System for Violations (CICAS-V). This effort was part of the U.S. DOT Intelligent Transportation System CICAS-V initiative to accelerate the introduction of emerging technology to address crashes at intersections. This evaluation was based on subjective data collected from a pilot test of the full implementation of the CICAS-V in anticipation of eventually conducting a field operational test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration managed this project in cooperation with the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership that developed and built the CICAS-V and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute that conducted the pilot test. Data were evaluated from 87 naive drivers who were placed into CICAS-V equipped vehicles to navigate a two-hour prescribed route through equipped intersections in the New River Valley region of Virginia. During the prescribed route, drivers crossed ten stop-controlled and three signal-controlled intersections making a variety of turn maneuvers through each for a total of 52 intersection crossings.
