Details of sleeper preparation, treatment and installation are provided. Data relevant to the performance of all sleepers to 25 and 26 years are presented and discussed. Within a given species/treatment combination a higher average retention and a narrower retention distribution range was achieved in incised sleepers compared with non-incised sleepers. Higher pressure produced higher average retentions than did low pressure, irrespective of timber species. Jarrah sleepers found to be infected by the fungus Fistulina hepatica were more permeable to preservatives than uninfected sleepers. The average service life of untreated jarrah sleepers was 21-25 years as compared with 4-8 and 13-15 years achieved by untreated karri and untreated marri sleepers respectively.
