In early 1970 the National Road and Traffic Research Institute, commissioned by the National Police Board, conducted a study to determine the most convenient method of weighing trailer, truck, and semi-trailer vehicles, employing six portable vehicle scales. The institute weighed a vehicle with two front axles using various methods. By repeating the weighings several times, the range in measurements of bogie pressure and gross weight were determined. In addition, the error was calculated that arises from weighing the vehicle in stages rather than weighing it all at once, which would require eight scales. When the entire vehicle is weighed at once the maximum error is + or - 1 percent. When front and rear bogies are weighed separately the error in bogie pressure is +1 + or - 2 percent and for gross weight it is +1 + or - 1 percent. The corresponding figures for weighing the left and right sides separately are -4 + or - 3 percent and -4 + or - 2 percent.
