The Maritime Administration's mission is to improve and strengthen the U.S. water transportation system to meet the economic, environmental and security needs of the Nation. The U.S. water transportation industry serves the needs of both foreign and domestic commerce. It comprises companies that carry freight or passengers on the open seas or inland waterways, offer towing services, charter vessels, and operate canals and terminals. The U.S. water transportation industry is in a period of renewal with major changes in trades, fleets, gross output, employment and assets. The following snapshot highlights the major changes that have occurred over the last five years (2004-2009).
